Rebuild Your Brand

Many of us experienced abrupt changes during the first half of 2020 that’s left our previous lives largely unrecognizable. Indeed, each of us are struggling in our own unique ways while embracing the unfortunate collapse of our economy that’s left millions of able workers unemployed. We all walked various paths which suddenly changed directions.

  • Some have been with the same company for 20+ years with upcoming plans of retirement.

    • Some started new families while struggling to provide support.

      • Some graduated with an offer that no longer stands.

  • While others embraced the unknown by starting a company to quickly find it’s not for the faint of heart.

Feeling lost due to recent unemployment? Are you constantly wondering..

What happens next?

How will my skill set transition to a new opportunity?

Where do I even begin when I don’t know what I want?

To be clear, you’re NOT alone. These questions are commonplace, particularly during times of economic uncertainty. Even when life seems secure, countless others have pondered similar thoughts during various stages of their careers only to never take action.

So, what’s the difference? Many of us are never “pushed” or otherwise forced to make a change. And, although uncomfortable, sometimes starting from scratch is just what the doctor ordered. It can be weirdly invigorating and foster personal growth in ways we never thought possible.

If you were forced to change paths or otherwise interested, I outlined a few key steps to help jump-start your search.

  • First, ask yourself questions to better understand your interests and strengths

    • Looking back on my career, what role did I enjoy most and why?

    • What projects were most intriguing to me and why?

    • Hypothetically, if I didn’t get laid off and the company was growing, what role would I be interested in and why?

    • What sets me apart from my coworkers?

    • In past reviews, what were my strengths mentioned by supervisors and peers?

    • If someone needed help with [X] they would come to me and why?

  • Next, update your resume to include:

    • Responsibilities listed in each role

    • Initiatives you tackled

    • Accomplishments which highlight your strengths

    • Career goals

    • Skills Section to highlight software & language experience

    • Education/Training Section to highlight military, degrees, certificates, & continued courses/training

    • Extracurriculares Section to highlight organizations you’re involved with, charity work, anything to showcase who YOU are!

  • Now that you better understand where your passion lies, start doing some research

    • Incorporate some of the key words you uncovered in your analysis and search for jobs that include your interests

  • Inform Recruiters on LinkedIn that you’re actively looking

    • They can help walk you through the process and discuss opportunities you may have missed
